Role:

Summary of work performed:
This 8-span utility bridge carries 2 – 32” D.I. sanitary sewage force mains and 8 telecommunication lines from Key West to the Fleming Key WWTP and was damaged by drifting barge impacts during hurricane Irma (2017) requiring an emergency reconstruction contract. HighSpans was contracted by the City of Key West to provide plans and specifications for a short notice emergency temporary repair as well as permitted permanent repair to piers damaged by the barge impact as well as additional dolphins to protect piers from future impact. Design requirements included the requirement to maintain operation of all utility lines throughout construction (in very close proximity to foundation construction) and extreme durability concerns in this exceptionally corrosive environment. Final design included piers constructed with 14” composite shell-grout filled Auger Cast Piles (ACP) with reinforced conc cap as well as several composite ACP timber dolphins.
